On only the second day of the spring semester the final Yvonne Sligh Book Voucher was given out to a deserving student. Over the last two weeks, 88 book vouchers for $150 each were distributed for a total of $13,200.
“The Yvonne Sligh Book Voucher Program was created in 2002 by the Foundation Board and Mendocino College Faculty in memory of late librarian, Yvonne Sligh. The creators of the award felt it was important to establish a program that provides support to students who are not receiving any type of financial aid other than the Board of Governor’s fee waivers and who have not received a Mendocino College Scholarship,” stated Executive Director Katie Fairbairn.
This program is stronger than ever due to the generosity of Mendocino College Faculty, Staff and Administrators (through payroll deduction), the Mendocino College Bookstore, Mendocino College Foundation, and all of the individuals and organizations who respond to our appeal letters and provide generous support.
“On behalf of the 88 students who received these vouchers, thank you to everyone who donated to the program. Many students and their families do not qualify for financial aid and don’t have the highest grade point averages, so this program was created specifically for them. Sometimes all it takes is something as small as a $150 voucher to keep a struggling student in school and moving forward towards reaching their goal,” noted Fairbairn.
