Seven Years Later and It’s Working!

A little over seven years ago little fifth-grader Alexis Small was sitting next to her best friend, also named Alexis, in an assembly at Yokayo Elementary School when she received a surprise that would change her life.

Alexis had been chosen to receive the Adopt-A-Fifth Grader award. The award provided a $1,000 scholarship at Mendocino College upon graduation from high school. Alexis always believed that she would attend college, but now there was actual scholarship money waiting for her to attend.

College’s New Online Scholarship Application is a Hit!

The college’s new web-based scholarship application process is a hit amongst students! The scholarship application period opened on January 2 and by January 10, just 8 days later, over 100 students had applied for scholarships. “This amount of activity so early into the application period is unprecedented,” stated Jerry Chaney, Foundation Director and Scholarship Chair.

Mendocino College Scholarship Application Now Web-based

The Mendocino College Foundation is thrilled to announce the arrival of a new web-based scholarship application process.

“We are so excited to provide this new online application for our students,” stated Lana Eberhard, Scholarship Coordinator at Mendocino College. Students will no longer fill out a paper scholarship application by hand and physically turn it into the Scholarship Office. Now they will simply go online to apply and be considered for over $200,000 in scholarship awards.

The young man reached into his car and grabbed his tool belt. Strapping it on, he quickly climbed the ladder and was on the roof taking instruction from the project foreman coordinating the installation of roofing shingles on the house. Although the ease with which he went about his business suggested this was his profession and just another day on the job, the reality was far from that.

Mendocino College Foundation Scholarship Winner: Crysten Starrett

Ukiah native, practicing Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), and current second year nursing student, Crysten Starrett won two prestigious scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year at Mendocino College (MC). She won a Mendocino College Foundation Evelyn R. Foote scholarship as well as the Heidi Marie Daniel Memorial Scholarship, for a total of $2500.00 to assist with her academic expenses.

Karen Gilmore ESL Book Awards Help Students Succeed

Mendocino College Students enrolled in noncredit ESL (English as a Second Language) courses received $50 book awards to help them purchase the required materials for their college coursework.

Established by the Mendocino College Foundation in fall 2011, the Karen Gilmore ESL Book Award Program assists students enrolled in non-credit ESL coursework. The award was created to honor and carry on the legacy of long-time Mendocino College ESL faculty Karen Gilmore, a beloved teacher and supporter of her students.

100% Pass Rate for Mendocino College Nursing Grads Third Time in the Past Four Years

The Mendocino College Nursing Program is proud to announce that 100% of this year’s graduates taking the 2017 NCLEX-RN exam have passed on their first attempt. “This marks three out of the past four years with a 100% pass rate for our nurses,” stated Fran Laughton, Nursing Program Director.

“Our students work extremely hard to complete the registered nursing program. It is a rigorous program, and we work hard to prepare them for success beyond graduation,” stated Laughton.

Jennifer Nauert of Lakeport recently won two Mendocino College Foundation Scholarships: the Lake County Friends of Mendocino College award, and a Mendocino College Foundation Academic Excellence scholarship, for a total of $2500.00. In addition, she received the Academic Excellence Award for Human Services and Highest Honors for her 4.0 Grade Point Average.
