Originally a farm girl from Palisade, Nebraska, LaRue Kobrin arrived in Fort Bragg with her husband and life partner, Frank Bender in 1974. Although she held a doctorate in psychology from the University of Colorado, Kobrin did not have any academic aspirations at that time, according to her longtime friend, Deborah White. Instead, White said, “She became the manager of Captain Flint's fish and chips restaurant, 'an institution' on the Coast. LaRue was perfectly at home as a manager: she was practical, down-to-earth, and always very likeable.

Karen L. Gilmore ESL (English as a Second Language) Book Award
On Thursday, February 2nd ESL Instructor Euline Olinger provided three of her students with a much needed Karen L. Gilmore ESL Book voucher.
The Mendocino College Foundation established the ESL Book Award in 2011 at the request of Sarah Walsh, ESL Professor. The award is a book scholarship which provides financial assistance to students. Eligible students are enrolled in noncredit ESL classes and are not eligible for any other college awards or scholarship.

Over $3,000 Raised to Support the Food Pantry
On Tuesday, November 29, Mendocino College Students took part in the college’s first annual Giving Tuesday event. All of the proceeds will be used to purchase non-perishable food for the on-campus food pantry.

The late John Bogner was a beloved Foundation Director and community leader. A perpetual award, the John Bogner Fine Arts Scholarship, was established to honor his love for theatre and music.

Evelyn Redemeyer Foote was born at the family home at Vichy Springs on August 26, 1902, to Martha and John Augustus Redemeyer. Her father managed the Vichy Springs resort when she was a child.

On Tuesday, October 20, 400 area students from grades 6-12 attended a special discounted matinee performance of the Mendocino College Theatre Department’s spring production of The Matchmaker, Thornton Wilder’s uproarious farce about love and money.
