10th Anniversary for Adopt A Fifth Grader Program

June 14, 2017
Record Breaking Year for Adopt A Fifth Grader Program

The Mendocino College Foundation began administering the program in 2007 from Hopland Elementary School with one AAFG recipient. The program has steadily grown each year and donors continue to support the program year-after-year.

According to Katie Fairbairn, Foundation Director, “the AAFG program is changing the discussion around the dinner table. Families that didn’t talk about their children attending college, are now! This program has created an energy within our communities and families that attending college is real and possible.”

Eighty-three fifth-graders throughout Mendocino and Lake counties received the Mendocino College Foundation’s Adopt A Fifth Grader (AAFG) Award for 2017. To date, 363 students have received this award and guarantee of a college scholarship.

In 2016, the program had 58 AAFG recipients representing both counties. The large jump in numbers this year, is due to the commitment that the Fort Bragg Rotary Club made to its community. Rotary pledged to provide a $200 match towards every AAFG adoption on the coast.

“Instead of providing the customary $700, businesses and individuals stepped up with $500 which was then matched with $200 by the Rotary Club. There were 30 AAFG awards on the coast this year compared to five last year,” stated Anna Kvinsland, Development Director, Consultant.

This program is made possible by the generous support of donors. This year’s list includes: Fort Bragg Rotary, Leslie Banta, Wade Koeninger, Bradford Foundation, Rotary Club of Willits, Mendocino College Trustees, Mendocino College Foundation, Paul & Pam Jepson, Jim & Marilyn Harden, Kelseyville Sunrise Rotary, Christy & David Scollin, Channing & Diana Cornell, Joe & Diane Mayfield, Bob Blanc, Mark & Wendy DeMeulenaere, Ukiah Kiwanis Club, Carl Ehmann and Family, Ken & Benda Hoek, Tom & Angie Herman, Northshore Business Associates, Mary Lamb, Charlie & Wanda Mannon, Richard Selzer- Realty World Selzer Realty, Doug Boswell Family, Stephen & Elisabeth Pasternak, Katie Fairbairn/Jane Kesey/Lynda Myers, Ed Haynes, Mendo Lake Credit Union, John & Sandy Mayfield Pacific Redwood Medical Group, Mike & Diane Mayfield, Mary Anne Landis & Howie Hawkes, Norma Watkins & Les Cizek, Linda & Andrew Banta, Soroptimist International Fort Bragg - Carol Steele, Kathleen Holmes, Harvest Market - Tim Bosma, Jerry Matson, Sean Leland, Hilary Miller, Eric Miller, Garden Ranch Real Estate, Betty Stechmeyer, Dave Turner- FloBeds, Craig & Joan Woods- in Honor of Frederick T Holmes, State Farm- Carol Millsap, Nancy Severy, Paul Clark, Joe & Ruth Sparks- in Memory of Dennis Kerwin, Dr. Jorge & Megan Allende, Irma Turner/Kelly Denham, Mendocino College Fulltime Faculty, JoAnn Morgan, Mendocino College Management Supervisory Confidential Group, Dr. Diane Harris & Doug Hammerstrom, Lake County Friends of Mendocino College, Stepahnie Carullo, and to all of our anonymous donors, thank you!
