Meet Scholarship Recipient Zachary Visinoni
The Carl J. Ehmann Scholarship provides one very fortunate student with $2,000 in financial support. This perpetual scholarship was established to honor Dr. Carl Ehmann, Superintendent/President of Mendocino College from 1990-2001. Dr. Ehmann worked very closely with the Mendocino College Foundation and was an integral part of bringing in some of the Foundation’s largest gifts. Recipients must be of sophomore standing, enrolled in 12 or more units and maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA.
Zachary Visinoni was awarded this coveted scholarship for the 2014/15 school year, and his plans include becoming an orthopedic surgeon. He has completed 49 transferable level courses at Mendocino College and maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point average. This aspiring doctor is not only an exemplary student he is also an outstanding ball player.
“Zach is a gritty competitor who has the mental fortitude to close games on the mound. He led the Bay Valley Conference in saves during his freshman year. He has the ability to strike out his competitors with a few different pitches, and he can pitch through any situation with his sheer toughness,” according to Matt Gordon, Interim Athletic Director and Baseball Coach.
Additionally, Chemistry Instructor, Jordan Anderson states, “what impresses me most about Zach is his ability to juggle both academic and athletic goals and maintain excellence in both. He is dedicated, self-disciplined, never gets frustrated and treats me and his fellow students with the greatest respect.”
Zach recently remarked, “No one in my family is involved in medicine. However, I chose to become a doctor because I feel as though I am able to communicate well with others and I love the sciences. I want to become a personable physician—one that listens well and has a patient’s well-being as the first priority.”
