Two fifth graders from Fort Bragg’s Dana Gray Elementary School to be chosen
The Mendocino College Foundation is excited to announce that Sean Leland State Farm and Carol Millsap State Farm are the first sponsoring businesses of the inaugural year of the Foundation’s Adopt A Fifth-Grader program on the Mendocino Coast.
The Adopt A Fifth-Grader program helps to motivate students at a young age to continue on to higher education by providing a financial incentive – a $1,000 scholarship to Mendocino College upon graduation from high school.
Sean Leland said, “At Sean Leland State Farm we know how important an education is, and we also know that it doesn’t just happen. It takes planning. Setting the foundation for success early will establish the skills necessary to achieve goals and ultimately increase the students’ opportunities in the future. We are happy to partner with Mendocino College and help these young people achieve their goals and realize their dreams.”
Donors can designate a specific elementary school, within the Mendocino-Lake Community College District, for their award. Sean Leland State Farm and Carol Millsap State Farm have designated that their gift will go to support students from Dana Gray Elementary. The Adopt A Fifth-Grader recipients will be carefully selected by the students’ principal and/or teachers, and will receive $25, an identification card and a certificate detailing the award’s future benefits.
Anna Kvinsland, Development Director of the Foundation said, “We are incredibly grateful to Carol Millsap and Sean and Karen Leland for their vision and inaugural support of this program that changes lives and gives many families hope. Especially impactful, Sean Leland State Farm has committed to annually sponsoring the Adopt A Fifth-Grader program. We hope that other coastal businesses and individuals will join Sean and Carol in their support of local youth and higher education.”
A $700 donation sponsors one fifth-grade student. Each $700 donation is invested over a seven-year period and by the time the recipient graduates from high school, provides for a maximum $1,000 scholarship.
