The Friends of Mendocino College Coast Center (FMCCC), a new affiliate organization of the Mendocino College Foundation, recently provided two gifts to support student success at the coast campus.
As their initial gift, the FMCCC funded a selection of English as a Second Language (ESL) books as requested by instructor Marybeth Arago. Arago explained how she only had a few tattered copies of ESL books suitable for adult learners, all of which had been read repeatedly over the semesters. “Reading is one of the most important things a person can do to acquire a new language,” said Arago. “For a long time, I've wanted to put together a really good, extensive reading library for students--one that would accommodate all levels of English language learning. This wonderful gift of books helps to achieve that goal, and it will help students immensely.” With the gift of $500, Arago was able to purchase a selection of ESL books in a range of topics. The books are part of the Mendocino College library system, but shelved at the Coast Center and available to students locally.
Aware that average textbook costs have sky rocketed in the last decade, the FMCCC voted at their January meeting to fund $700 raised in a year-end appeal toward the establishment of a Coast Center textbook Lending Library. It is not uncommon for texts to cost as much as $150 or more per course. Many students cannot afford to purchase the textbooks that are absolutely essential to their success in class. Due to the generosity of local donors, texts for courses in Chemistry, Algebra, English, Agriculture, Public Speaking and Psychology are now available for in-house use. The Lending Library helps relieve the financial burden of attending college, a barrier to so many. Ultimately, the FMCCC hopes to be able to provide one copy of every textbook required for each class offered at the Coast Center.
MCF Development Director Anna Kvinsland said a recent survey of Coast Center students indicated our students would most benefit from textbook assistance, basic school supplies, gas money, and tutoring. “The FMCCC is devoted to supporting our Mendocino Coast Center and its students and faculty. By staying abreast of the challenges facing our coastal students, the Friends group is able to respond flexibly and effectively.”
All donations to the Mendocino College Foundation are tax-deductible gifts that are truly appreciated by those who benefit. To learn more about the programs supported by the FMCCC, contact Kvinsland at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 961-2203.
