2011 Mendocino College Foundation Scholarship Awards
Thomas M. Evans Sr. Scholarship — 1 - $2,500 award
This scholarship honors Thomas M. Evans and family for their generous gift of a large piece of real property to the Mendocino College Foundation in 1995. The Thomas M. Evans Scholarship is distributed annually to recipients who are required to maintain a 3.5 GPA while enrolled in 12 or more units at Mendocino College.
George R. Szanik Scholarship — 1 $2,500 award
The Mendocino College Foundation received a substantial donation through the estate and trust of George R. Szanik in 2004. This extraordinary gift was made to support the Foundation and the College’s shared mission of helping people of all ages pursue their goals. Recipients of this scholarship must maintain a 3.5 GPA while enrolled in 12 or more units at Mendocino College.
Jim Meyer Scholarship — 1 - $2,000 award
During his career as Vice President of Development at Sonoma State University, Dr. Meyer shared his expertise in fundraising, estate law and estate planning with the Mendocino College Foundation Board. His knowledge and valuable experience helped the Foundation members become more effective in raising funds for Mendocino College; this scholarship honors his valuable contribution. Recipients of this scholarship must maintain a 3.5 GPA while enrolled in 12 or more units at Mendocino College.
Carl J. Ehmann Scholarship — 1- $2,000 award
This perpetual scholarship was established to honor Dr. Carl Ehmann, Superintendent/President of Mendocino College from 1990-2001. Dr. Ehmann worked very closely with the Mendocino College Foundation and was an integral part of bringing in some of the Foundation’s larger gifts. Recipients must be of sophomore standing, be enrolled in 12 or more units and maintain a 3.5 GPA.
Evelyn R. Foote Scholarship — 24 - $1,500 awards
In 1996 a very generous gift was given to the Mendocino College Foundation through the estate of Evelyn R. Foote for the sole purpose of supporting scholarships. This donation continues to fund a large portion of the scholarships distributed by the Foundation on an annual basis. Recipients are required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 while enrolled in 6 or more units at Mendocino College.
Mendocino College Foundation Scholarship — 38 - $1,500 awards
The Mendocino College Foundation was established in 1984 for the purpose of supporting student scholarships and providing College programs with supplemental revenues to fund innovative endeavors.The total investments of the Foundation have grown to more than $5 million which enables more than $125,000 in scholarships to be distributed annually to Mendocino College students. The recipients of these scholarships are required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 while enrolled in 6 or more units at Mendocino College.
Hulda and Alfred Weger Scholarship — 3 - $1,000 awards
This perpetual scholarship was made possible by a generous donation in 2009 by Hulda Weger, a retired school teacher in the Ukiah area. Mrs. Weger dedicated over 30 years to teaching at local grammar schools and working alongside her late husband Alfred, former owner of the Redwood Tree Gas Station and Orr Springs Resort. This scholarship is awarded annually to Ukiah High School alumni enrolled in 6 or more units at Mendocino College.
Mary Oosting Scholarship — 1 - $1,000 award
In memory of Mary Oosting, this scholarship was established in 2001 by loving family and friends to support students who are highly motivated in the area of visual arts. Each year faculty members in the Mendocino College Visual Art Department identify a recipient who demonstrates commitment and enthusiasm in this area of study.
Salmen Family Scholarship — 1 - $1,000 award
This scholarship was established in 2010 by the Salmen Family to support Mendocino College students who are pursuing a career in one or more of the following sciences: astronomy, chemistry, computer, physics and math.
Kathleen Kohn Fetzer Family Foundation Nursing Scholarship — 3 - $2,500 awards
The Kathleen Kohn Fetzer Family Foundation funds this scholarship to inspire and assist nursing students who are interested in in-home care nursing. The family is personally acquainted with this area of medical care and feels strongly that it is vital to the field of nursing. Mendocino College nursing faculty identify recipients based on their level of interest in in-home care as well as their academic excellence.
Karen L. Atkinson Nursing Scholarship — 2 - $1,250 awards
This scholarship was established in 2005 in memory of Karen L. Atkinson by generous donations from family and friends. Karen was a devoted nurse, and this fund assists students who aspire to enter into the nursing profession. Recipients are chosen by the nursing faculty at Mendocino College.
Heidi Marie Daniel Nursing Scholarship — 1 - $1,000 award
Heidi Marie Daniel’s family honors her memory with this scholarship in the hope it will assist deserving nursing students reach their educational and career goals, as Heidi herself was an aspiring nurse. The nursing faculty at Mendocino College select a recipient based on their demonstrated dedication and proficiency in this area of study.
Albert Beltrami Internship Scholarship — 2 - $500 awards
The Albert Beltrami Internship Scholarship was established in 2011 for Mendocino College students who wish to pursue a career in local government. Participating students intern in local city or county government and enroll in Mendocino College Cooperative Work Experience Education for college credit.
Directors/Trustees Annual Fund Scholarship — 6 - $1,000 awards
The Foundation Directors and the College Board of Trustees established this fund to increase support and funding for students and programs. One hundred percent of the monies in this fund are contributed personally by the Directors and Trustees, demonstrating their commitment to the students and programs at Mendocino College. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA while enrolled in six or more units at Mendocino College.
Bernard Osher Foundation Scholarship — 5 - awards up $1,000 each
The Osher Scholarships are due to a generous commitment from The Bernard Osher Foundation which donated $25 million to the Foundation for California Community Colleges to establish an endowment. The endowment provides permanent scholarship support to California community college students who demonstrate a commitment to completing their education and have financial hardships making it difficult to pay to attend college.
